Pants style descriptions.
Items with parentheses have variations based on those other styles. For instance,
(l,s,f) would include loose, semi-fitted, and fitted variations. When looking up
a full description, look up the variant too. That is, look up loose pants as
well as hip hugger when looking for the Loose Hip Hugger ease amounts.

Description |
| |
|
| Baggy |
Loose fitting pants through the body and through the leg. Very
comfortable, suitable for casual styles in a twill or medium weight fabric. Can
also be used with drapey fabric to create a dressier pant. |
| Bell-Bottoms |
A classic that’s back! Close fitting to the knee, then flaring
to 5 inches wider than needed for ankle size, with a slight curve to the hem. |
| Boot Cut (f,s,t) |
Carefully tooled to provide that extra width from knee to ankle
to allow room for a boot underneath, but not so much to counter the slim line of
the pant. These come in fitted, tapered, and slim fit styles. Each fits as
their namesake to the knee, but then drops straight (essentially), staying knee
width to the hem. The hem is raised in the front and lowered in the back to fit
properly over a boot. |
Bicycle Pants *PP |
Very close fitting, intended to be made from stretch fabric.
Actually smaller than the body measurements. |
Cargo *PP |
Loose, wide, dropped crotch and lots of pockets of all kinds.
The signature pockets on the side are large and square, but you can mix and
match pocket styles as you like. Comes with an optional hem-band at the ankle. |
| Culottes (s/a/f) |
Traditional pant with a skirt-like look. Lower crotch and
longer crotch extension, plus fuller legs all contribute to the look. |
| Drawstring |
Looser pant with casing for a drawstring. Sew entrance and exit
openings either side of the center front – the most common way to create the
openings is with a simple vertical buttonhole. |
| Fitted |
Fitted to waist, ab and hip, with a straight taper to the ankle. |
| Flared |
A gentle taper toward the knee, then a flare to the ankle on
both inseam and outseam, distinguishes these pants. Suitable as a casual or
dressy pant, depending on the fabric. |
Hip Hugger (l,s,f) *PP(f) |
Loose, semi-fitted, or fitted styles that come to the hip level,
below the waist by the difference between your Floor To Waist Side and Floor To
Hip measurements. |
| Jeans |
Close fitting in the waist, ab, hip, and crotch, these pants
also contour the buttocks, pulling in more at the upper thigh than the fitted
pants do. |
| Leggings |
Very close fitting, intended to be made from stretch fabric, but
not intended to be stretched to fit. |
| Loose |
Loose fitting pants have ease through the ab and hip, and a
wider leg than most other pants. There is a small amount of taper in the leg on
the pattern, but the visual effect is that of straight-legged pants. |
Low Rise (l,s,f) *PP(f) |
Loose, semi-fitted, or fitted styles that come up to the abdomen
level, below the waist by whatever your Ab Depth measurement indicates. |
One-Seam (l,s,f) *PP(s) |
No outseam! These loose, semi-fitted, or fitted styles have a
wrap-around leg that sews together at the inseam and crotch only. Easy to sew,
forgiving in the fit, and with a distinctive look, the one-seam pants can be
dressy or casual, depending on the fabric. Optional hem-band to pull the ankle
in snug if you like. |
| Painter's |
This traditional pant is straight-legged with pockets, and is
most commonly made from denim. |
| Palazzo |
Palazzo Pants flare from the hip. Mostly used for dressy pants,
in drapey fabric. |
| Panty (s,l,b) |
Options for stretch-to-fit (make with stretchy knit) or form fit
(silk or satin). The panty patterns also include waist level (waist, ab, or hip)
and legline (boy cut (flat leg) to French (very high on the hip). |
| Pajama |
Very loose and comfortable, with lots of room at waist, hip,
crotch and legs. Elastic waist only. |
| Pleated (l,s,f) |
Pants with one pleat, in loose, semi-fitted or fitted styles.
The pleat may be adjusted for width, and may be designed to pleat just through
the body of the pants (which adds very little extra width to the pant leg) or
the pleat may be designed to travel the length of the leg, in which case some
width is added to the pattern through the leg. |
| Princess (l,s,f) |
Loose, semi-fitted, or fitted pants with princess seaming down
the front instead of darts or other shaping mechanism. Darted in the back. |
Scrubs *PP |
The pattern for all our medical professionals. Loose but not
sloppy. |
| Semi-Fitted |
Some ease added through the ab and hip of this pant. Straight
taper to the pant hem which is moderate. Suitable for dress pants, or for
individuals who want only a small amount of contouring in their pants. |
| Skort |
Shorts with a wrap piece across the front. Gives the illusion
of a wrap skirt, but with the security of shorts. Very popular with teens. |
Slacks *PP |
Semi-fitted silhouette, with a slightly lowered crotch. The
classic style for dress pants. |
Slim Fit *PP |
Fitted through the waist, ab and hip, with virtually no ease.
Contoured leg gives the slimmest fit with the least ease, short of the leggings
pattern. |
| Smooth Front |
Pant with all front contouring in the side seam, no darts,
pleats or other seam interruptions from side seam to center front. Individuals
with significant differences between waist and ab measurements will get a
strongly curved side seam which is difficult to sew to the back pant, which
retains the dart shaping and will have a more flat hip curve to the pattern. |
Sweats *PP |
Elastic waist and cuff, straight legline. Partially fitted waist.
Loose crotch. Intended for comfortable fit and to be made from stretch knit
fabric. |
| Tap Pants |
Very short shorts. Designed as lingerie, to be worn under street
clothes or as intimate wear at home. |
| Tapered |
Fitted through the waist, ab and hip, with virtually no ease.
Contoured leg, with more contour than the fitted pant or jean, but less
contouring than the slim fit pant. |
| Tights |
Stretch to fit, this skin-tight garment should to be made from a
knit with 100% stretch factor and recovery, such as lycra. |
Trousers *PP |
Some ease added through ab and hip, for a looser fit (but not
baggy). Increased crotch length and crotch depth from the standard pant
silhouette. Sometimes used as a dress pant for those who like a looser fit than
the slack offers. Pant leg is slightly tapered on the pattern, but the visual
effect is that of a straight legged pant with no tapering. |
| Warmups |
Very loose, hangs straight to the floor. No leg shaping at all.
Elastic waist. Optional elastic cuff. These are meant to be baggy and non-binding. |
